Course or Subject Matter: Instrumental Music and Band

Course Overview: |
|

|
Band is an elective course where entrance and placement
is based upon the student level of performance. Instrumental music lessons
are available to any student who demonstrates an interest in acquiring
proficiency in a particular band instrument.
The band meets three times a week for 40 minutes, everyone rehearsing
in two full band rehearsals and one smaller sectional every week. Students
are encouraged to study with a private teacher and are required to practice
as homework.
The band performs at three major concerts through out the year, Christmas,
spring and the State Large Group Festival, and does various assemblies
for the student body. |

Objectives: |

- To give the student an opportunity to enjoy music through active participation.
- To work with peers and cooperate in a group effort.
- To develop and
refine personal character traits of responsibility, discipline, leadership,
poise, dependability, and citizenship.
- Acquire concepts and skills
to provide recreation pleasure, and worthy use of leisure time.
- To
acquaint the student with a varied repertoire of good band, ensemble,
and solo literature.
- Develop skills in discipline and therefore provide
a feeling of accomplishment through personal effort.
- To expose students
to a variety of music from other cultures.

Course Content: |

- Preparation for performances
- Two full band rehearsals per week approximately
40 minutes each
- Sectional rehearsal once a week approximately 40 minutes.
- Preparation
of small groups and individuals for music festivals, auditions, solo
and ensemble festivals etc.
- Sight-reading is incorporated into rehearsals
to expose students to a wide variety of literature and develop reading
skills.
- Various method books are used to develop technique.

Using a balanced variety of age/level -appropriate music and methods,
the instrumental music program will plan its curriculum to train each student
in the following instrumental skills. |

Tone and Intonation: These depend upon the
director's judgment, whatever is considered acceptable achievement in this
somewhat intangible
area of student preparation. |
|

|
- Demonstrate the basic characteristic tone of the instrument and maintain
through out the range on the instrument.
- Demonstrate the dynamic levels
of piano and forte and make adjustments in tone quality to perform
accents, pf, size etc.
- Demonstrate articulation for staccato and legato
styles.
- Demonstrate proper styles of attacks and releases of tone.

- Proper tonguing attack is dependent upon your personal standards.

- Tongue a Bb, F, and Eb concert
scales in sixteenth notes m.m. = 80

Fingering Requirements: |
|
| |
|
- Mastery of the C, F, Bb major scales in sixteenth notes at m.m. =
80. Each specific instrument determines the number of octaves.
- Mastery
of C, F, and Bb Major arpeggios in sixteenth notes at m.m.=80, the
range will be determined by each specific instrument.
- Mastery of C, F,
Bb Major scales by thirds in sixteenth notes at m.m.=80, range will
be determined by each specific instrument.
- Mastery of chromatic scales
according to each specific instrument.
- Mastery of G, D, Eb Major scales
arpeggios and thirds should be complete by the end of the eighth grade
year.
