  Task: Musical Review

Under section C in the Maine Learning Results "Criticism and Aesthetics", the Music Department is responsible for assessing each student to make sure they meet or exceed the local, State and National standards stated in this requirement. "Students will reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of art works (musical performances).

 
   
       
 
1. Research-
    Web Quest
Students are required to do the Web Quest research, find and read the written critiques or reviews, and answer the questions. They must find two different Reviews on their own, list the URL, who the critic was, where and when it was performed, and what the show was about

2. Attending a
     Musical
Each student must attend a public performance of our Fall Musical to critique. If the Student is unable to attend that performance or is performing in it himself, the student must attend another professional, amateur, college, or high school musical production to critique. Students should include a show program or a ticket stub with the Review as proof that they were there.

3. Notes Students are asked to use a word processor to type the answers to questions1 through 10 in the assignment sheet, in complete sentences.

4. Writing the Critique The student is asked to write (using the notes from the previous section) a one to two page review or critique of the performance using the critiques in the research section as models for this assignment. It should be clear what type of show was performed and the quality of the performance.
Excellent - A Good - B Fair - C Poor - D
The critique was well thought out, organized and professionally written. Opinions and descriptions of the performance were tactfully written, and explained with musical terminology and facts. The critique was well thought out and organized, however there were some grammatical errors in the composition. Opinions and descriptions of the performance were well done for the most part, and were explained with some musical terminology and facts. The critique showed some thought, however it was poorly organized and had a lot of grammatical errors in it. Opinions and descriptions were given, but without support of musical terminology, or explanations. The critique was poorly organized and showed little thought or insight. Sentences were incomplete and there were many grammatical errors. Very few opinions or descriptions of the performance were given. No musical terminology, explanations or facts were given for the opinions that were there.
Learning Results Standards

The Maine Learning Results for visual and performing arts states that high school students must be able to:

  1. Explain and justify personal aesthetic criteria for critiquing works of visual and performing art, text, and events.
  2. Research the work of critiques, historians, aestheticians, and artists to analyze and interpret works and compare different critiques of the same performing art work.
  3. Analyze, interpret, and evaluate subtle and complex meaning in performing arts intended to persuade and influence.
  4. Each student must demonstrate that they meet or exceed the standards for this requirement.
